Help, I've been stolen!!!
Hey, this ain't about sex but it is about getting screwed. I have come to know hundreds of unsuspecting and uninformed members of the human race during the past five years, each with their own unique story. Each story relates, in turn, a uniquely commonplace occurance. Each was screwed, screwed by someone they never met, screwed by someone while that someone was hundreds if not thousands of miles away, in another State, on another continent, in another country.
Though a very small percentage of the victims fell prey to a convincing telephone call, received from an "800" number. The vast majority were exploring the world via port 80 on their personal computer or MAC.
"Jane" a college professor was search a popular Internet auction site for that dream deal on a new computer when it appeared before her eyes. The seller, or so she thought, possessed an impeckable rating from other auction users. The pc (ok, it was really a MAC) was listed for thousands less than retail. Too good to be true? Naaaaaa. A notice left by the seller directs "Jane" to contact him/her in order to receive consideration and permission to bid on the MAC. She does, sending a email. The seller responds promptly, advising "Jane" the MAC is hers for the irresistable price of $3,500.00. This was the dual proc, ubber MAC, retailing for over $6,000.00. She's hooked and agrees to terms. Following the directions of the seller she delivers the loot to Western Union and has them wire it to Great Britain. MUAZ that money bye bye.
After a little research I find the seller had emailed "Jane" from an Internet cafe located in GREECE. I pointed out to "Jane" that the seller profile identified them to be a resident of the USA, not Great Britain or Greece. Highjacked.
That was an early scam, of which I hope everyone is aware. Since that time the bad seeds have adapted, put to use many insipid tools, set up some nice window dressing, and continue to convince the unsuspecting, the uninformed, and the believers of nothing's "too good to be true" to hand over their cash, credit cards, checking accounts, and identities. There's plenty more to come so stay tuned.
